Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation

Population

Population: 600,000 (671,247 - July 2005 est.)
Population growth rate: 2.91% (2005 est.)
Population < 15 years: 42.8%
Birth rate: 37.52 births/1,000 population (2005 est.)
Life expectancy at birth: 61.96 years
Infant mortality: 74.93 deaths/1,000 live births

Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE

Median urinary iodine: unknown. Earlier studies showed two Islands with a 24.0% TGR observed in schoolchildren ( Anjouan Island ) and 51.0% TGR in adult women ( Moheli Island ). Surveys from 1990 to 1995 showed national TGR of 15.6%, reaching 47% in one area. Cretinism of 0.8% in one area.

Iodized salt Coverage

Household iodized salt use:   83%

Salt Situation Analysis

Production

No data available but some salt imported from Madagascar

Consumption

  • Estimated daily per capita salt consumption: no data
  • Estimated % of all salt consumed by people which is adequately iodized (household level):   No Data Available

Iodine Procurement and Utilization

No Data Available

Universal Salt Iodization Program

Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities

Legislation

  • Legislation: Being developed (1996). An interministerial directive (late 1995) requires that all salt imported or produced for human or animal consumption must be iodized.
  • Legislation for Animals: see above
  • Year Enacted: 1995

Program Monitoring and Evaluation

Ministry of Health is responsible but no data available though goiter and salt monitoring activities are planned.

Other Interventions

Supplementation in areas of high goiter prevalence, target groups are women 14-49 y, children to age 14. Consideration being given to iodization of other foods. No other information available.
