Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation

Population

Population:   16.4 million
Population growth rate:   2.51%
Population < 15 years:   46.2%
Birth rate:   40.4 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth:   44.9 years
Infant mortality:   93.6 per 1000

Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE

Median urinary iodine: 263-488 mcg/L (not national). 1982 Regional survey in the North and West. Conducted by MOPH and Institute of Public Health . No national data. TGR of 18.5% observed in 9 Prefectures in Northwest in 1972. Highest rates were found in highland areas (Danane, Man and Odienne). 1982 survey data from Man indicated a goiter prevalence of 54.4%. TGR estimate based on 10% living in areas with 35% TGR and 50% living in areas with 5% TGR.

A 1994 survey of 1663 people in Glanle in Man reported 43% goiter, and 1.5% cretinism.

Median UI of 263 mcg/L in rural north and Abidjan , 1998.

A 1999 study (IDD NL 15(3):42, 1999) found big differences between rural north and Abidjan in UI (263 vs. 488 mcg/L) and salt iodine (17 vs. 33 ppm).

Iodized salt Coverage

Household iodized salt use:   31%

Salt Situation Analysis

Production

The bulk of the import is from Senegal (by sea) and Ghana (by land). All imported salt is powdered and sold. Quality ranges. Annual imports estimated 45,999 tons most of which is for human and livestock consumption.

The annual requirement in Cote d'Ivoire is about 45,000 Tons mostly for human and livestock consumption. All crude crystal from solar sea salt is crushed and packed locally. There is only one major salt importer and processor ( Cote d'Ivoire Sel) in the country. This Company has established a large warehouse near Abidjan for drying, grinding, sieving and packing imported crystal salt. The Company has a capacity of processing 200 Tons/day which would meet the requirements of the entire country. The quality of product is satisfactory. There is competition from Senegal and Ghana who bring in sub-standard salt unofficially and sell it to local traders to process and resell at a cheaper price. The Cote d'Ivoire Sel suspended production.

Consumption

  • Estimated daily per capita salt consumption: 8-10
  • Estimated % of all salt consumed by people which is adequately iodized (household level):   31%

Iodine Procurement and Utilization

KIO3, 30-50 ppm. 17-33; range at production centers 15-267 ppm, median 26 ppm
