Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation
Population
Population: 10.26 million
Population growth rate: -0.07%
Population < 15 years: 15.7%
Birth rate: 9.08 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth: 74.95 years
Infant mortality: 5.46 per 1000
Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE
126 mcg/L. Most recent data show median UI 126 mcg/L.
ThyroMobil project (1995) at 2 sites reported median 86 mcg/L.
Bohemia and Moravia believed to be endemic for IDD in past. Data from 1980's observed goiter rates between 10-50% ( Bohemia , Klatovy and Prague ) and mildly deficient urinary iodine levels (60-100 mcg I/gr creatinine). Forty years of prophylaxis with iodized salt abolished large and medium-sized goiters in all age groups.
Iodized salt Coverage
Household iodized salt use: 90-100%
Salt Situation Analysis Production
Salt production is local. Iodized salt is used for humans, animals, and the food industry.
Consumption
Household consumption is 100%, and coverage includes humans, animals, and the food industry.
Iodine Procurement and Utilization
KIO3, previously had been KI, at 20-34ppm
Universal Salt Iodization Program
Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities
Legislation
- Yes, for voluntary use of iodized salt
- Year Enacted: 1947
- Latest Revision: 1987
Program Monitoring and Evaluation
National Coordinating Committee since 1944, includes MOH, thyroidologists, nutritionists, salt producers, veterinarians, hygienists. Urinary iodine determination and thyroid size by ultrasound have been used for monitoring.
Other Interventions
Iodine also used to fortify infant food and nutrition, and some other foods and drinks.
