Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation
Population
Population: 1.42 million
Population growth rate: -0.52%
Population < 15 years: 16.4%
Birth rate: 8.96 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth: 70.0 years
Infant mortality: 12.3 per 1000
Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE
Median urinary iodine: 65 mcg/L (1995). Median urinary iodine 65 mcg/L (1995). No data available on goiter prevalence. Neonatal TSH screening shows 17% with TSH > 5 mIU/L (2001)
Iodized salt Coverage
Household iodized salt use: 12% (2000)
Salt Situation Analysis Production
All salt is imported, mainly from Ukraine , Belarus , and Denmark ; some salt is repackaged domestically. Packaging and labeling are good.
Consumption
No data on household iodized salt consumption.
Iodine Procurement and Utilization
Information from salt producers and nutrition surveys suggest that up to 12% of all traded salt is iodized (1999-2001) with KIO3 and KI.
Universal Salt Iodization Program
Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities
Legislation
Under consideration.
Program Monitoring and Evaluation
National Committee for Food, Nutrition, and Physical Activity. IDD control is part of National Food and Nutrition Plan (2001). Iodized salt is monitored at wholesale and retail levels but not on a regular basis. No regular impact monitoring.
A meeting in April 2000 proposed development of an action plan by the National Committee for Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity, inclusion of IDD elimination activities in the National Action Plan for Food and Nutrition, an awareness raising campaign, regulations for use of iodized salt in key facilities, establishment of monitoring and enforcement of regulations, and implementation of evaluation and monitoring, including IDD surveys, market availability, consumer health behavior and awareness.
