Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation

Population

Population:  7.6 million
Population growth rate:  1.96%
Population < 15 years:  43.1%
Birth rate:  39.78 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth:  45.9 years
Infant mortality:  129.0 per 1000

Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE

Median urinary iodine: 37 mcg/L (1992). 1992 survey from 22 villages in the South East Regions Kissidougou and Gueckedou by the German Agency for Technical Co-operation. Study done on 3968 children aged 8-13 and adults 18-45. Goiter ranged from 7.2 to 51.7 with an average of 26.4%; 1993 survey described 63.6% prevalence; 1994 gave regional distribution: maritime Guinea, 40%; lower Guinea, 41%; upper Guinea, 74%; forest Guinea, 74%; middle Guinea, 76%.

Median urinary iodine: in the 1992 survey was 37 mcg/L, range 1-78.

Iodized salt Coverage

Household iodized salt use: 12% (1999)

Salt Situation Analysis

Production

20-70% imported from Senegal . Information as of 1997 described the first five small iodization plants have been ordered to ensure the iodization of local salt which is produced by traditional heating methods. Depending on funds, these units were expected to be operational by March-April 1996. The Government also plans to strengthen the national standard laboratory and adopt a logo to identify the locally iodized salt. Harmonization of standards with neighboring countries was also to be carried out in 1996. 30-50 per cent of the imported salt was to be iodized by the end of 1996.  Domestic salt production only takes place between December and May. Salt is produced artisanly.

Consumption

  • Estimated daily per capita salt consumption: no data
  • Estimated % of all salt consumed by people which is adequately iodized (household level):   12% (1999)

Iodine Procurement and Utilization

KIO3 at 30-50 ppm.

Universal Salt Iodization Program

Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities

Legislation

  • Legislation: yes
  • Legislation for Animals: no data
  • Year Enacted: 1996

Program Monitoring and Evaluation

MOH is responsible. Current activities unknown.

Other Interventions

8,000 adults and children received oral iodized oil some time in the early 1990's.
