Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation
Population
Population: 22.32 million
Population growth rate: -0.21%
Population < 15 years: 17.4%
Birth rate: 10.81 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth: 70.39 years
Infant mortality: 18.88 per 1000
Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE
60-100 mcg/L. Median UI reported as 60-100 mcg/L.
1991 urinary iodine data indicate that moderate IDD existed in 11 of 30 districts surveyed, with median values ranging from 24-121 mcg/L (overall median = 58 mcg/L).
ThyroMobil (1995), 7 sites, range 34-140 mcg/L, median 50-100, and 13-36% goiter
Data from 1970's and 1980's revealed high goiter prevalence in Capathian mountains (>60%). More recent data indicate that goiter still persists, though with decreased severe grades. A 1986 survey showed about one-third of country's districts had > 5% goiter, worst in northeast and center.
Iodized salt Coverage
Household iodized salt use: 25%
Salt Situation Analysis Production
Production is local (available for human, animal, and food industry use). The country has a huge capacity for salt and iodized salt production, and there have been recent efforts to improve them.
Seven salt factories are state-owned but operate properly, and are working towards addition of iodate, quality control, and packaging.
Animal salt does not now contain iodine but is being considered for the future.
Consumption
Iodized salt has about 25% of the market share.
Iodine Procurement and Utilization
Salt iodized with KIO3 at 15-25 mg KIO3
Universal Salt Iodization Program
Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities
Legislation
- Legislation: Yes, not enforced
- Legislation for Animals: No Data Available
- Year Enacted: 1956
- Latest Revision: no data
Program Monitoring and Evaluation
A National Coordinating Committee for IDD Control consists of the Ministry of Health and Family, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Forest , and the National Authority for Consumer Protection. Efforts are underway to activate a national coalition against IDD.
Other Interventions
tablets of 1 mg KI for school children and pregnant women have been used in some districts.
