Current Iodine Deficiency Disorder Situation

Population

Population: 10.66 million
Population growth rate: -0.12%
Population < 15 years: 19.6%
Birth rate: 12.8 per 1000
Life expectancy at birth: 73.72 years
Infant mortality: 17.36 per 1000

Prevalence of Goiter/ UIE

158 mcg/L (Serbia); 90 mcg/L (Montenegro). Median urinary iodine 158 mcg/L in 1515 samples, 1998-1999 survey.  No national data on goiter.  Before iodine prophylaxis (1953), IDD considered endemic in all mountainous areas. Survey of 4598 schoolchildren, 1998-1999 by ultrasound, < 3%.

Cretinism was present in past, not recently.

Iodized salt Coverage

Household iodized salt use: 73%

Salt Situation Analysis

Production

Production is local and used for humans, animals, and the food industry. Use is compulsory and universal.

Consumption

The market share for iodized salt in Serbia is estimated at 73%.

Iodine Procurement and Utilization

Salt iodized with KI or KIO3 at 12-18 ppm. Currently, the concentration of iodine in the salt is being increased through legislation and a new survey will assess its affects.

Universal Salt Iodization Program

Information, Education, Communication (IEC) Activities

Legislation

  • Legislation: Yes. Program which began in the late 50's was a competent means of controlling IDD. Policy was later neglected, causing iodization of salt for animals to be stopped in 1973.
  • Legislation for Animals: No
  • Year Enacted: 1956, increased to present level used in early 1990's

Program Monitoring and Evaluation

A national coordination committee has been in existence since 2000 includes the Ministry of Health, Agriculture, and Trade, thyroidologists, nutritionists, salt producers, veterinarians, journalists, and inspectors. Monitoring carried out by national coordinating committee for salt and nutrition.
